Pithapuram Municipality is 2nd Grade ULB in the East Godavari district of A.P. it is spread over an area of 19.57 Sq. Kms. with a population of 54,859 (2011 census). It is known for / famous for its Pilgrimage Center.

It is located 212 Kms. from Capital city and 20 Kms. from District Head quarters. It was established as  2nd Grade Municipality in the year1957.

Climate and Rainfall:
Pithapuram Town, in general, has a tropical climate, winters last from  November to February, while summers last from March to June. The annual rainfall is 178 mm, most of its received during the months of July to September.
The population of the town which was 50103 in 2001  increased to 54,859 in 2011 with an increase  of 9.49 % in the last decade. The sex ration is 1017 females per 1000 males. The literacy rate 67.43% of the male population and 64.01% of the female population are literate.
History & Culture:
Pithapuram is home to a dynasty. The Pithapuram Kings ruled the area for long. They established the Pithapuram Raja Government Degree College in Kakinada. These Kings also gave lands to the missionaries for the establishment of a century old humanitarian hospital (Christian Medical Centre).

Missionaries of the Canadian Baptist Mission established their medical enterprise here in the form of the famed hospital Christian Medical Centre. CMC, Pithapuram was known for its quick and healing touch since the eighteenth century.

Government Polytechnic, Pithapuram was sanctioned vide G.O.Ms.No.40 of Higher Education (TE-I) Department, Dated: 30-05-2013. The Director of Technical Education has established the Government Polytechnic, Pithapuram in East Godavari District during the year 2014-15. The Polytechnic offers the Diploma Courses in 2 disciplines, covering Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering. The Diploma programs prepare students for entry-level employment in various professional disciplines, and for study at an advanced level.

At present, the following Diploma Courses with the annual intake sanctioned against each are being run at this Institute.

The Diploma programs in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are accredited by the State Board of Technical Education & Training (SBTET), Andhra Pradesh.

The Polytechnic was allotted a Land of an Extent 5.00 acres of land in Survey Number: 257/4,  situated beside Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple and NH 216 in Pithapuram Town & Mandal.  The Polytechnic was sanctioned an Amount of  778 Lakh Rupees for Infraustructure facilities under NABARD-RIDF XXIII. vide G.O.Rt.No.187, Dated: 06-11-2017 of Higher Education(TE) Dept.

The activities like sports & games, yoga awareness camp, clean & green and Swatch Bharath programs are organized at this Institute. Similarly, the Engineers’ Day, Teachers’ Day are being celebrated at this Institute. The Institute has been showing excellent interest in the student welfare, career and academic counseling activities
